Non-Executive Directors (Part-Time)

The BBA is an independent, non-profit distributing company that has established a significant reputation within the built environment sector over the past 52 years. Based just north of Watford and working in some 30 countries worldwide, we are the largest provider of assurance services to the UK built environment sector, with a turnover of around £11m+ and some 160, mainly scientific and technical, staff. This diverse, growing business has over 700 clients, including some of the largest construction product manufacturers in the world and some of the largest energy providers in the UK.

These are incredibly exciting times for the BBA as we continue to deliver our ambitious growth strategy within an increasingly demanding environment. In order to match the emerging needs of the sector we work in, we are establishing new businesses and opening offices to expand post Brexit. Our technical skills are second to none and will be the driving force behind an already strong brand.

We are now looking to appoint 2 high-calibre and passionate Non-Executive Directors (NEDs) to support and strengthen our Governing Board and to provide guidance and insights on strategic development. In these roles we would expect you to support and uphold our core values which are courage, integrity, loyalty, collaboration, passion and accountability. We are especially looking for individuals with the following skill sets and expertise:

– An individual with a finance background to support our finance and audit activity and to help guide the development of our diversifying business. Ideally you will have experience of working in the professional services sector.

– Our second NED will have significant experience preferably in the commerce/marketing/business sector. In this role you will also act as Senior Independent Director (SID). As the ‘SID’ you will act as an alternative point of contact for major stakeholders who may have made little headway in discussions with the Chair or Chief Executive – or who may have concerns about the performance of such individuals. SIDs serve as a sounding board for the Chair and act as an intermediary for the other directors. The SID also takes the lead in annual appraisals of the Chair.

However, all NEDs will need to demonstrate the following range of skills in order to deliver the strategic leadership the BBA requires:

– Tenacious and diplomatic with a good appreciation of the role of a non-executive director.
– Evidence of expertise in your specialist area of business/industry
– Financially astute with strong commercial acumen
– Adept at developing effective internal and external collaboration, regimes, relationships and networks
– Ability to set strategic direction, you must be able to identify and critically assess opportunities and threats within a complex operating environment.
– Able to demonstrate independence of judgment
– Evidence of success in your chosen career with good all-round business acumen
– Ability to command the confidence of and influence stakeholders at all levels, including industry and other public bodies and agencies. We would expect you to be interested in research, innovation and quality assurance regimes.

This is a great opportunity for individuals to bring their expertise and knowledge to shape the future of the BBA and the built environment. As a strategic thinker, we want you to provide constructive challenge to the Executive Team in order to address strategic issues.

These are three-year terms with eligibility for one extra term. The time commitment for this role is circa 12 days a year, for which a salary of £8,400 is payable. You will be expected to attend 4-6 board meetings per year as well as informal briefing sessions and may be asked to participate on specialist committees.

If either of these roles interest you and you are looking for a very motivating and valuable opportunity, please send your CV and any supporting information to Lorraine Anderson, Personal Assistant to the CEO at landerson@bbacerts.co.uk.

Please state which role you are applying for.

BBA is committed to equality of opportunity for all staff and applications from suitably qualified persons are encouraged.

Closing date for applications is 14 September 2018. Interviews will be conducted from October 2018 with expected start dates in November 2018.
