BBA Inspects for FMB Scheme

(13 July 2007)

After a very successful pilot programme in the North East of England the Federation of Master Builders has appointed the BBA to undertake inspections of its MasterBond scheme.

The BBA has run installer schemes for over 30 years and currently employs nearly 40 full- time building inspectors, undertaking over 30,000 inspections per annum. Dependent upon the trades, we can deliver anything from a single inspection to a full ISO 9000 management system assessment. The assessors used for the FMB scheme are all full time BBA staff, well qualified and experienced in all aspects of construction and home improvement.

FMB Members’ details are passed to the BBA on a monthly basis and we write to members asking for details of recently-completed work that is suitable for inspection. We then contact a selection of the householders and arrange inspection visits.

The purpose of the visit is to assess the quality of work done, to assess whether the legal obligations to Planning and Building Control have been met and to gauge and rate the customer’s satisfaction. The BBA is not acting in an enforcement or legal compliance role.

At the conclusion of each visit the inspector produces a handwritten report for the FMB which identifies member details, customer details, a brief description of work done and comments on what was observed.

The inspection programme was rolled out nationally during May.

BBA Approval for Novabrik

(13 July 2007)

Acheson & Glover have successful gained BBA Approval for the Novabrik, mortarless brick cladding system (Certificate No. 07/4421).

In a ceremony held at the recent Institution of Maintenance and Building Management (IMBM) Exhibition in Gateshead, IMBM President George Armstrong, presented Acheson & Glover Business Development Manager, Mervyn Kirk with the BBA Certificate for Novabrik.

The patented Novabrik system was originally developed by a leading Canadian manufacturer in collaboration with the country’s National Research Council. Acheson & Glover, based in Northern Ireland, began manufacturing the product under license three years ago. The system comprises brick-sized interlocking tiles which lock together to form a double-lapped weatherproof outer skin for timber-framed, steel-framed, conventional blockwork and concrete panel structures. This prevents water penetrating the wall and creates a weather- resistant breathable skin that allows free flow of air into the cavity.

Mervyn Kirk is confident the BBA Certificate will help Novabrik gain widespread market acceptance.

‘This is a major vote of confidence from the leading independent authoritative body for building products and systems certification, and comes at a time when Novabrik is gaining a significant foothold in the market’.

‘The BBA approval process provides customers with the assurance that the product achieves stated performance levelsand compliance with Building Regulations. It also takes into account the requirements of warranty bodies, like the NHBC; as well as the Construction Design and Management Regulations’.

(13 July 2007)

BBA Alan Thomas (right) presents Matthew Hahn (right) and Co-Director Darren Joyce (centre) with two BFRC Energy Ratings Certificates along with Thomas Witt and Daniel Erne (left) representatives from Swiss supplier Erne.

The BBA was delighted to award two BFRC ratings Certificates, covering a range of styles, to Glas Facades Limited at a Press Reception in London.

The Glas Vision 3000 range is an aluminum clad timber window system and has achieved BFRC rating bands A to C with different glazing specifications.

The range is offered initially for the commercial market and the company is stressing sustainability aspects, with PEFC certified timber and up to 70% recycled content in the aluminum.

Darren Joyce commented ‘We were very pleased with the BBA’s prompt response to our enquiry about BFRC rating and BBA Project Manager Luke Adams undertook the work in an efficient and professional way’.
