Although the BBA did not exhibit at Interbuild, the exhibition provided an excellent platform for the award of several BBA Certificates. There is a separate item on the BBA Certificate for the Viridian Solar Collector elsewhere in this issue of the BBA News - an important first in the renewable-energy sector. Two new multifoil product Certificates were also presented. One to Web Dynamics for its new RafterFit product, designed to fit between rafters, and another to the John Cotton Group for its Kontrol multifoil product. This means there are now three BBA-approved multifoil products on the market and more will follow in 2008. Specifiers and contractors already have a choice of BBA-approved (and consequently accepted by the NHBC and local authority building control inspectors) multi-foils: next year that choice will be increased. Also in the energy-saving area, we were delighted to present NorDan with a BBA Certificate for its high-performing wooden window system, designed for the worst the Norwegian winter can throw at it, and to ICF Tech for its Certificate for an insulating concrete formwork, designed and made in the UK.
(21 November 2007)
The BBA has been awarding Agrément Certificates for injected cavity wall insulation for over 30 years and we have run approved installer schemes for only a slightly shorter time.
Recent changes in weather patterns, with high winds and intense rainstorms put strain on the weathertightness of buildings and can cause floods in areas where flooding has previously been rare or almost unknown.
To provide information for individuals considering injected cavity wall insulation, we have produced a new Information Bulletin: Injected Cavity Wall Insulation in a Changing Climate and this is now downloadable via our website.
All BBA Approved Installers are required to carry out thorough surveys before installing materials in any dwelling and the Information Bulletin sets out the key criteria examined by the installer before injection is considered.
Injected cavity wall insulation is one of the many BBA approved ways of improving the thermal performance of a building and, providing the insulating material is made in accordance with the relevant Agrément Certificate and the installer works within the specification agreed with us, it will perform well.
BBA APPROVES FIRST EVER RENEWABLE ENERGY TECHNOLOGY (21 November 2007)
The British Board of Agrément has issued its first ever Certificate for a renewable energy technology - the Clearline range of roof integrated solar water heating panels from Viridian Solar (Certificate No. 07/4474).
In common with other quality solar panels, Clearline has passed tests to the European standard for solar panels (EN 12975-2 : 2006). The BBA and Viridian worked together to develop a series of tests. Greg Cooper, Chief Executive of the BBA said ‘This was a new area for us but we have unrivalled expertise in the assessment of roofing products, so evaluating the weathertightness and structural aspects of the Viridian panel was straightforward, as was our examination of its behaviour in relation to fire. Measuring the energy performance was more of a challenge but again our experience in hot water storage systems was invaluable, as was the input of our client, and our work on durability over the years helped us derive a statement for that, too’.
The news has thought to have had a positive reaction to the wider industry, Peter Crane, Head of Standards at NHBC said ‘NHBC welcomes the Certificate awarded to Viridian Solar for their roof integrated solar water heating panels. It is important that renewable energy technologies incorporated in new homes are both properly assessed and correctly installed’.
