European Technical Approval Information

The BBA offers European Technical Approvals to manufacturers who wish to obtain this pan-European system of approval in order to go on to achieve CE Marking.

ETAs are available for products whose performance or characteristics fall outside the scope of any harmonised European Standards mandated by the European Commission and are based on assessment methods known as European Technical Approval Guidelines. Recently however, a number of ETAs have been awarded on the basis of what is known as the Common Understanding Assessment Procedure (CUAPs). CUAPs were originally intended for one-off products but this option has been extended to encompass product types which are available throughout the EU.

ETAs coupled with an appropriate level of Attestation Conformity will allow manufacturers to obtain CE Marking for their products. At this point, CE Marking is not mandatory in the UK but it is in most other European countries.
