Latest NewsA WORLD FIRST FOR ROOFING MANUFACTURING COMPANY (02 May 2008)
Liquid Plastics are pleased to announce their new BBA Certificate – the world’s first BBA certificate for a completely cold-applied built-up roof system that does not use any heat or mechanical fixings (Certificate No 07/4496).
‘We are delighted that long-standing BBA client Liquid Plastics has added yet another Certificate to the list it holds’ comments Alan Thomas, BBA Sales and Marketing Director. ‘The new system has been put through the mill at the BBA, as with all assessments we carry out, and only after we were totally satisfied that the material was fit for purpose did we award the Certificate’.
Phil Richardson, Liquid Plastics Marketing Director comments: ‘We have found that our customers are increasingly looking for complete solutions for their roofs, where the entire system has achieved BBA approval. When we launched our built-up and green roof systems we considered the options and believed it would be beneficial for both the client and ourselves if we pursued a BBA Certificate that tested all of the component parts together, rather than as single products’.
Phil Richardson concludes, ‘We developed Decothane — our liquid roof membrane – in the 1980s. It has since become one of the fastest growing roofing products in the UK and in many ways has shaped the roof waterproofing industry into what we see today. And as the industry continues to evolve, attitudes towards the current accreditation methods will also begin to change. We are answering the call for complete roof systems where each component is fully tested together as part of that system, and not as an individual product. Ultimately this represents the most comprehensive form of approval and is what all specifiers should be looking for’.
ELWA Technical Committee for Roofs and Balconies (02 May 2008)
The formation of the European Liquid Waterproofing Association (ELWA) Technical Committee for Roofing and Balconies convened for its introductory meeting at Liquid Plastics in Preston. The Committee is formed of volunteers from the existing ELWA members and includes Simon Wroe (BBA), David Johnstone (Britannia Paints) as Acting Chairman, Mike Byrne (Liquid Plastics) as Vice-Chairman, Mike Wilson (Polyroof), Phil Jarratt (Sika Limited), Kevin Greally (Hyflex Roofing Systems), Jack Howarth (Tor Coatings), Kevin Noakes (Tremco), Trevor Lang (Alumasc) and Ian Henning (NFRC).
The responsibility of the Technical Committee will be wide and varied, but initially will be to provide the best possible technical guidance to users of liquid applied waterproofing systems and to ensure the best interests of all ELWA members are served at national and European level as well as, perhaps ultimately at, international level.
To begin with, the Technical Committee will be addressing the existing ELWA waterproofing guidance notes and revising them to include reference to balcony systems and also to bring them in line with current legislation — this in itself is no small task. Part of the remit is also to build relationships on a technical level with other organisations within the UK, eg the NFRC, and also in Europe on the development and review of relevant Standards.
The Committee will be meeting on a quarterly basis and regular reports will be sent to the ELWA members, with updates being posted on the ELWA website.

The BBA has issued many Certificates for cladding systems, from plastic to natural products such as clay and slate, and the increasing use of cladding systems to facelift older commercial or industrial buildings converted to residential use has brought warranty organisations like the NHBC into play.
Claddings can form part of external wall insulation systems or simply as rainscreens and in this latter sector there are concerns among companies offering BBA approved systems that not all systems on the UK market have been through the same rigorous assessment and approval process.
The Centre for Cladding and Window Technology has developed a standard for wind resistance, weathertightness and mechanical impact. These are important criteria, but a BBA Approval will also look at fire risk, maintenance and – of most interest to architects and building owners – durability. As part of all of our assessments we also check that the manufacturer has control systems in place to make sure that the product specification we agree is maintained throughout the life of the BBA Approval. We don’t just take the manufacturer’s word for it, though. We inspect, usually twice-yearly, to see that the specification is unchanged and, every three years we undertake a partial re-assessment to see how the product is working in the market and to check if there have been any regulatory or other changes that might affect its use.
If a product has only a test report, there is none of the BBA’s assessment inspection and re-assessment involved with that and assurances that the product specification is the same as that tested can come only from the supplier of the system – hardly a disinterested party.
William Harwood, a director of TI Dynamic Facades, distributors of the BBA-approved Tonality Cladding Systems by Creaton AG (Certificate No. 04/4137) is irritated that some industry decision makers are ignoring these important differences.
‘The BBA looks at every aspect of a product and installation and demand that both are continually monitored for conformity, the CWCT should only be used as a complement to BBA approval and not in place of it’.
The BBA shares William’s concerns and encourages all those involved in the specification, selection and purchase of cladding and rainscreen products to ensure that they choose those that have been (and still are) under surveillance arrangements.
Downloadable BBA Certificates for cladding and rainscreen products and systems are available from the BBA’s website.
