Product approval & certification

BBA certification is recognised throughout the construction industry as a symbol of quality and reassurance. It's the vital ingredient in the provision of assurance, quality and integrity to a plethora of stakeholders in the construction industry.

BBA Highway Authorities Product Approval Scheme (HAPAS)

BBA HAPAS is where new highways products are assessed for quality and durability by the BBA. The scheme for highways surfacing materials includes tough performance requirements that align with the Highways Road Authorities and Overseeing Organisation's strict end performance requirements.

The BBA HAPAS scheme was established to provide a nationally recognised approval scheme for innovative products and systems used in highways works and construction.

Since 1998, BBA HAPAS Certificates and reports have provided highways engineers with invaluable data on product performance, design and installation for project planning.

This scheme covers a diverse range of highways products, including but not limited to:

High Friction Surfacing

This assessment is for the issue of a BBA HAPAS Certificate confirming a High-Friction Surfacing's compliance with minimum skid resistance requirement.

Thin Surfacing

An assessment for the issue of a BBA HAPAS Certificate confirming a Thin Surfacing system compliance with minimum requirements for texture depth, sensitivity to water, deformation resistance, bond to substrate and acoustic properties.

Crack Repair Systems

This BBA HAPAS Certificate confirms a Crack Sealing System’s compliance with minimum requirements for skid and deformation resistance, bond to substrate.

Manhole Reinstatement Systems

This assessment is for the issue of a BBA HAPAS Certificate for bedding and backfill mortars, and in some cases includes an asphalt surface course and joint and substrate preparation. The approved system includes resin based and cementitious based mortars for bedding and backfill of ironwork and will be assessed against the minimum requirements of compressive and tensile strength as required in HD 27/15 and HA 104/09 for use with ironwork up to a Group 4 as described in BS EN 124-1:2015.

Patch Repair Systems

A BBA HAPAS approved patch system which includes installed thermoplastic and cold-applied bituminous asphalt surfacing for use in random, non-continuous defects in both bituminous and concrete surfaces. All systems approved will have been assessed to confirm claims for performance relating to texture depth and skid resistance, deformation, bond to substrate and sensitivity to water.
