Product approval & certification

BBA certification is recognised throughout the construction industry as a symbol of quality and reassurance. It's the vital ingredient in the provision of assurance, quality and integrity to a plethora of stakeholders in the construction industry.

Product Excellence Programme (PEP)

The BBA has introduced the Product Excellence Programme (PEP) to ensure that our clients continue to provide world-class products in line with their Certificates. It gives reassurances to specifiers/designers and members of the public that BBA certified products are assessed on a regular basis by an independent and UKAS approved testing authority.

The Objectives of the Product Excellence Programme (PEP).

This means our clients can:

  • Provide additional reassurance of product performance to specifiers, government and customers
  • Demonstrate product integrity to their clients on an ongoing basis
  • Manage and mitigate the risk of products to the public
  • Build confidence amongst their clients and specifiers

How does the PEP programme work in practice?

Currently BBA Management Systems Auditor visit our clients manufacturing facilities twice a year (on average) to ensure that BBA certified products are continuing to be manufactured in line with our agreed quality plan.

In addition to this bi-annual review program the BBA will now physically test products either annually or triennially depending on the complexity of the product.

  • Complexity 1 Products -  are products which possess fire or structural type characteristics, these will need to be tested annually.
  • Complexity 2 Products -  are products which DO NOT possess fire or structural type characteristics these will need to be tested triennially.

How will product samples be selected?

Samples will be selected at random from warehouse stock annually or triennially during routine visit. Once the sample has been selected by a BBA Management Systems Auditor, clients will have to securelypack the product safeguarding against damage in transit -  identifying labels or markings must not be removed-  and send it to the BBA Product Excellence Testing facility in Watford.

When the BBA receives the sample, it will then proceed to test an indicative characteristic of the product. Clients will be informed if they have either passed or failed the test.  Products tested which fail to match our agreed specifications will be subject to immediate further investigation to determine the source of failure. Companies failing to address the failure will have their BBA Certification withdrawn.
