The National Highways Sector Schemes (NHSS) are bespoke quality management systems for organisations working on the UK road network. They are based on the ISO9001:2015 standards, but do not duplicate them.
There are currently more than 20 individual schemes which cover activities ranging from fencing, landscaping and vehicle safety restraints to road surfacing and marking and traffic management, and If your company supplies services to Highways England under the Specification for Highways Works (SHW), you must be certified under all the relevant schemes for the work you are carrying out.
NHSS aims to make sure that work you carry out is done to the highest standards of professionalism, ensuring the use of properly trained staff with a strong emphasis on health and safety.
Individual NHSS come under four main categories:
There are several advantages to getting registered under NHSS if your business has previously worked with Highways England, or you plan to tender for future work, main of which is an advantage over competitors who do not have enhanced business credentials through independent verification of processes which the BBA provides.
If you currently work only on non-national road networks, our NHSS registration scheme can also help clear the way toward you taking on contracts for the national road network providing greater visibility to contracting bodies.
The BBA offers certification to the following National Highways Sector Schemes:
We also welcome enquiries to other National Highways Sector Schemes on the same family grouping “Surfacing and SSR”, such as NHSS23.
