The BBA is committed to supporting construction product manufacturers as they navigate an increasingly complex regulatory landscape across the UK and Ireland. Following a successful trial with existing certificate holders, we are delighted to announce that Irish Building Regulations compliance can now be included as an additional benefit for all BBA Agrément applicants.

This enhancement enables manufacturers to demonstrate conformity with Parts A–M of the Irish Building Regulations right from the outset,  strengthening market access, supporting specifier confidence, and reducing the need for separate, duplicative assessments.

Strengthen Your Market Position in Ireland with a Single Certification Route

Whether you are entering the certification process for the first time or expanding the scope of your existing certificate, integrating Irish Building Regulations compliance gives you:

  • Stronger recognition
  • Broader market access
  • Greater confidence for Irish specifiers and regulators
  • A streamlined process without duplication

Why This Matters

After the end of the Brexit transition period in 2021, the Irish Government clarified how construction products used within the Republic of Ireland would be assessed going forward. In Construction Industry: Preparing for the End of the Brexit Transition Period – Your Questions Answered, (Construction Industry: Preparing for the end of the Brexit Transition Period – Your questions answered) Question 15 states:

Where Third Party Certificates (UK or otherwise) are relied upon, the certificate must explicitly confirm coverage for use in Ireland and demonstrate compliance with Parts A–M of the Irish Building Regulations.

This requirement created a need for a clear, trusted pathway for manufacturers to demonstrate Irish compliance alongside BBA Agrément Certification.

Following extensive consultation with certificate holders and strong results from market trials, we are now able to extend this option to every BBA Agrément applicant,  new or existing.

Ireland and the UK: A Closely Aligned Construction Landscape

Ireland’s approach to both building regulations and construction practices is closely aligned with those of the UK. The regulatory frameworks in both countries share a very similar structure, covering key areas such as structure, moisture resistance, sound, ventilation, drainage, fire safety, energy efficiency and access.

Beyond regulations, the onsite build process in Ireland also mirrors that of the UK more closely than that of many EU member states. As a result, the way buildings are designed, constructed, inspected and certified in Ireland is generally more in line with UK norms than with the more rigid, codebased systems typical elsewhere in Europe. And, of course, many UK and Irish Architects and Contractors work across both regions. This makes the addition of Irish Building Regulations compliance within BBA Agrément Certification especially convenient for manufacturers whose products are suitable for use in both markets, providing a single, streamlined pathway to demonstrate fitness for purpose across the UK and the Republic of Ireland.

What’s New?

You can now include Irish Building Regulations compliance when:

  • Applying for a new BBA Agrément Certificate, or
  • Updating an existing certificate

Provided eligibility criteria are met.

This option provides:

  • Verified compliance with Parts A–M of the Irish Building Regulations
  • A trusted route to support product acceptance in the Irish market
  • A simplified, integrated process that avoids duplication
  • A costeffective pathway to demonstrate wider regulatory compliance

How the Process Works for New Applicants

When you apply for a new BBA Agrément Certificate, you can now choose to include Irish Regulations compliance from the very beginning.

This ensures:

  • A single, streamlined assessment
  • No separate Irish process required
  • Unified evidence for UK and Irish stakeholders
  • Greater clarity for designers, specifiers, and building control specialists

Your BBA assessment team will guide you through how the Irish scope aligns with your product’s intended use and certification pathway.

What About Existing Certificate Holders?

If you already hold a BBA Agrément Certificate, you can still add Irish compliance provided:

  • There are no outstanding noncompliances
  • All certificate reviews are up to date
  • No invoices are outstanding

Once confirmed, the update can be completed quickly and efficiently.

How Long Does It Take?

Timelines will vary according to client requirements and the BBA scheduling system.
