It’s not just anyone who is accepted and appointed to become a Fellow with the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3). A most prestigious grade, a fellowship recognises people who have made significant contributions or established a ‘record of achievement in the materials, minerals, mining fields or other disciplines within the technical outreach of IOM3’.

And prouder we cannot be of our own Principal Scientist Jon Denyer who, this week, was appointed as a Fellow.

IOM3 is a major UK science and engineering institution and a registered charity governed by a Royal Charter that supports professionals in the materials, minerals, mining and associated technical disciplines to become, ‘heroes of the transition to a low-carbon, resource efficient society’. With activities structured around developing and promoting all aspects of the Materials Cycle, from exploration to characterization, processing, application, recycling and reuse, the Institute’s vision is to be recognised as the global leader for professionals involved with the materials cycle.

Jon Denyer already serves as Chairman of the B/540 Performance of Materials Components and buildings – a key committee within the UK National Standards body, set up to standardize thermal performance within the construction industry. Jon, who has worked for the BBA since 1986, helps to establish committee agreement on various standardization issues; in particular, ensuring the UK’s stance on European and International standards which remains well-represented.
Throughout Jon’s career, he has been active in standardization activities with BSI, UEAtc (The European Union of Agrément and the European Organisation for Technical Assessment (EOTA)). He is also currently Convenor of several National standardisation committees and European working groups focused on the thermal performance sector.

Jon has worked for the BBA for over 35 years in a variety of roles as a BBA graduate scientist and manager, and currently occupies the role of Principal Scientist. He is the BBA’s leading technical authority in the field of building physics and Certification. His subjective judgement on the adequacy of a wide range of material properties, based on data provided, including thermal, moisture resistance, ventilation and fire safety and the experience gained has resulted in his appointment to the role of BBA Authorised Signatory, which involves the review and validation of the work carried out by BBA Project Managers and, where appropriate, providing the final technical authorisation for the issue of Certificates. Jon’s role at the BBA further requires the preparation and delivery of technical training material, coaching and staff development and provision of technical advice to both other departments of the business and to the wider industry, leading to Jon playing a pivotal role in providing technical input to BBA Certification and policies.
