Civils & Drainage

Our Civils and Drainage team provide expert information and certification for a range of systems. Our certification helps to enhance established products and bring to market innovative ones while providing specifiers and contractors with the reassurance that the product is fit-for-purpose. We can provide certification for drainage systems including sustainable drainage systems (SUDs) and highway engineering as well as soil reinforcing systems including geosynthetic products, geogrids and geostraps to retaining wall structures and clay heave protection.

For a drainage system to be effective it must transfer surface water, wastewater or sewerage, sub-surface water or rainwater through a network of piping with the aim to assist in flood risk management and mitigation.

This is the case for any system, whether they are made from plastic or other material. In order to certify that they meet this requirement, we assess them for their hydraulic design, structural performance – including strength, impact resistance, durability and water tightness, and the performance of joints plus much more.

As part of the assessment the drainage systems purpose must also be taken into consideration to ensure they meet all required standards, such as those outlined by Highways England for highway systems.

We can provide certification for drainage systems up to 900mm made from metals including cast iron. As well as plastics (virgin and recycled) such as high-density polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), unplasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC-U), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), modified unplasticized polyvinyl chloride (MuPVC) and foamed polyethylene for pipe cores.

At the BBA, we can provide HAPAS certification for plastic pipe systems up to 3500mm diameter – an industry first, which is recognised by the Highways England and the British Plastics Federation.

We can certify a range of drainage systems for the residential, commercial and industrial sector which include:

• Above Ground Drainage

• Below Ground Drainage

• Stormwater Management Systems

• Rainwater Drainage

• Highways Drainage

• Culverts

• Steel reinforcements
