Open Doors is offering unique access to the construction industry to inspire the next generation of workers.

The construction industry is yet to shed its perception as being restricted to manual labour and muddy boots, often leaving construction as an afterthought for skilled workers, school leavers and graduates.

Open Doors is about to change that image by allowing us a look behind the site hoardings to show the variety of roles within construction, creating a more transparent and connected industry.

We often think about the widely publicised skills shortage as a lack of labourers but Open Doors recognises critical challenges with digital expertise and other knowledge gaps that may be solved through innovation.

What is Open Doors doing?

Working in partnership with several industry organisations including The Department for Education, Department for Work and Pensions, HS2, Kier Group, The Considerate Constructors Scheme and others,  Open Doors, a Build UK initiative, is offering site visits to anyone across the UK during March 2023. Projects range from tunnels to skyscrapers, as well as a wide range of virtual experiences.
In addition, offices, factories and other facilities will also open their doors to demonstrate the off-site roles across the sector.

So whether you are thinking about a new career or just curious to see how the buildings and structures in your community are constructed – Open Doors is a first step to give you the behind-the-scenes access to what really goes on.

Click here to book a site visit between 13-18 March 2023.

Why is this important?

Working closely with industry, we understand the challenges it faces; skills shortage, raw material shortages, rising costs, pressures on delivering more, quicker. Initiatives like Open Doors breaks the stigma of the industry as an outdated, stale environment that offers very little opportunities for career development.

The industry holds an enormous amount of opportunity for innovation, digitisation and optimisation; and as career paths, and skills, become more and more transferrable, Open Doors enables visibility of what can be achieved, once you get involved.
